Dental Exams & Cleaning
A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your dentist at your initial dental visit. At regular check-up exams, your dentist and hygienist will include the following:
- Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions. Through a dental radiograph service, the dentist can also evaluate your oral health. In this procedure, some important factors will be considered such as your age, dental history, current oral health assessment, and any history of previous dental disease.
- Oral cancer screening: Under this procedure, the dentist will check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer. This procedure is straightforward, and the dentist will mostly assess your oral cancer risk factors. After the screening, you may be scheduled for additional check-ups or a dental biopsy.
- Gum disease evaluation: Many people suffer from gum disease because of oral health neglect and lack of proper awareness. A simple gum disease evaluation can make a big difference. The dentist will start the evaluation by checking your medical history. Afterwards, he/she will proceed t check your gums and bone around the teeth.
- Examination of tooth decay: Tooth decay is a common problem that will get worse over the years. Through the means of special dental instruments, the dentist will examine your current tooth decay and its progression. After the detailed examination, the dentist will possibly recommend the best procedure to deal with your teeth decay problem.
- Examination of existing restorations: Have you had an existing dental restoration service? (i.e. crowns, fillings) If so, then the dentist can examine your exisiting restorations. This procedure is important in knowing the state of your restorations since they get damaged from wear and tear over time. If you’re planning for a replacement, then it’s important to have this examination procedure first.
Professional Dental Cleaning
Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
- Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments. Prior to the actual procedure, the dentist will get your oral history and examine your teeth for damage.
- Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease! By undergoing a plaque removal procedure, you’ll have better chances of fighting gum inflammation. And in turn, you can fight the onset of periodontal disease and other oral health problems!
- Teeth polishing: Do you want to have attractive and sparkly white teeth? Then you probably need a special teeth polishing procedure! Under this procedure, the dentist will remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling. This is only possible through the usage of special dental instruments.
