Inlays and Onlays in Kitchener
Between a filling and a crown
Keeps more of your natural tooth
Insurance and CDCP
Some teeth have too much damage for a filling but still have enough healthy structure that a full crown would remove more than needed. An inlay or onlay sits in between. At Lancaster Dental on Lancaster St W in north Kitchener, we use inlays and onlays to repair back teeth while keeping as much of the natural tooth as possible. Call 519-578-9670 to book an exam.
What inlays and onlays are
Both are custom made pieces that are bonded into or onto a tooth. An inlay fills the space between the cusps, the raised points on the chewing surface. An onlay covers one or more cusps as well. They are made outside the mouth to fit your tooth exactly, then bonded in place.
When we might suggest one
- A large cavity that would leave a filling weak
- An old, large filling that is breaking down
- A cracked or broken cusp
- A tooth that needs strengthening but not a full crown
For smaller cavities, a tooth coloured filling is usually enough. For a tooth with more damage, a crown may be the better choice. We’ll explain which option fits your tooth and why.
What to expect
- First visit. We freeze the tooth, remove decay or the old filling, shape the tooth and take an impression. A temporary goes on to protect it.
- Second visit. We remove the temporary, check the fit and colour of your inlay or onlay, and bond it in place.
Caring for an inlay or onlay
Brush twice a day, floss daily and keep up with your regular checkups and cleanings. Avoid chewing ice or very hard foods, and ask about a night guard if you grind your teeth.
Insurance, direct billing and CDCP
We bill most plans directly, including the Canadian Dental Care Plan, and can send an estimate to your insurer before treatment. Read our CDCP page for details. We accept cash, debit, Visa, Mastercard and Amex, and payment plans may be available case by case.
